a graphic novel about a young bechdel's relationship with her father.
i chose to write about this book for one of my finals.
content warning for suicide and some homophobia/lesbophobia.
recommend.
one of my favorite books ever.
always a fan of gothic fiction/horror. and tragiromance (though this book isn't a romance).
heathcliff is kind of awesome in that he isn't, really. or maybe he is.
i want to try and give this one another read because i actually can hardly remember anything that happens in it.
one of those required readings for high school but i did like this one.
and if i said pip and herbert should've been endgame...
a fictional tale set during the french revolution. i found it more entertaining than great expectations.
my heart belongs to sydney carton.
harrowing story of a butch lesbian's life, but it's not all doom and gloom.
content warnings for violence, sexual assault, and homophobia/lesbophobia/transphobia.
white gay bildungsroman. it was alright, i might give it another read.
i had no idea that there was a movie adaptation until a good number of years after i finished reading
this
book.
a young black man in 40s louisiana is accused of a triple murder and sentenced to death.
filled me with frustration and sadness and a bit of rage, but ultimately
it's a very moving book.
obvious content warning for violence and period-typical racism.
a biographical about van gogh's time in arles living with paul gauguin. possibly sensationalized? but it was informative and entertaining and reading it made me fall in love with van gogh all over again.
gothic horror - my favorite! and this one has lesbian undertones...
if you like weird houses and ghosts. read this one.
i know i have this marked as 'read' but i didn't finish the book...i want to...
my favorite shakespeare play. i'm drawn to certain kinds of melodrama, i guess.
pretty good read, though i found some of it to be heavy-handed.
the writing is very millenial-coded. take that how you will.
the first story in the novel was actually published as a short story on n+1 as 'the feminist'
and it caused some controversy.
there's a story in here that goes crazy with the freaky hentai sex fetishes that made me cringe so badly
because it gave me extreme secondhand embarrassment and i understood all of the otaku and internet language
which made it more embarrassing for me. i recommend reading this for that story alone if you can stomach it; i
thought it was hilarious.
the people in this book seem far-fetched yet also painfully real.
i know people have beef with this book (and vuong) but i enjoyed this one. i like his poetry as well so it stands to reason, i suppose.
